How to make a vegeTARIAN pizza
Vegan diet plan
Not all pizza’s are bad for you. Control the base, the toppings and the amount of cheese and you can have yourself a well balanced meal that covers all the food groups; fruit, vegetables, grains and legumes. Just don’t forget to serve with a side salad.
Make the toppings count
Pizza is a bit of a tradition in my household, its one of my many ‘go to’ meals because they are just so easy to throw together. And who doesn’t love a pizza? A pizza can have just about anything added to the top, my favourites include:
- onions
- mushrooms
- kalamata olives
- artichokes
- sundried tomatoes
- kale
- baby spinach
- rocket
Other toppings include:
- meatfree sausage or meatballs
- Mexican beans
- lentils (Dhal)
- potato
- capsicum
- roast pumpkin
- zucchini
- eggplant
- pineapple
- corn
- even bean sprouts and coconut shreds!
When it comes to a cheese, don’t worry you certainly don’t have to miss out on a super melty cheesy pizza. Dairy free cheeses have come a long way from when it resembled and tasted nothing short of cardboard. Now days the choices are in abundance and they are super melty and don’t look too dissimilar to dairy cheese which is perfect for those unsure about a plant-based lifestyle diet.
What no dairy cheese
Brands to look out for are:
- Daiya mozzarella or cheddar style shreds
- Notzarella
- Redwood cheezly
- Tofutti
- Miyoko’s Kitchen
- Bio cheese
- Damona Divine Cow Vegan cheese
- Vegusto
- Botanical Cuisine
Note: some of the cheese recommendations are a soft cheese which are ideal for a more gourmet pizza. Should you have any questions about where to buy and what cheese to use on your pizza, in a lasagne or melted in a cheese and baked bean toastie, contact Tarian Pantry at sayhello@tarianapantry.com.au.
All you need is a good base to work from
Making a pizza base doesn’t require you to be a baker either, all the ingredients needed for the perfect pizza dough are:
- flour (our preferred flour is wholemeal spelt)
- yeast
- sea salt
- water
- olive oil
If you are really time poor, we can’t go past take me home… pizza bases, they come in both a garlic and tomato base, thick or thin and a gluten free variety too.
