Friday Favourites – Non Dairy Milk
Despite the association the word milk is not unique to the dairy industry although the dictionary would have us think otherwise:
- an opaque white fluid rich in fat and protein, secreted by female mammals for the nourishment of their young.
- draw milk from (a cow or other animal), either by hand or mechanically
- exploit or defraud by taking small amounts of money over a period of time
Like many I grew up being told in order to have healthy bones and teeth I needed to drink cow’s milk because it was high in calcium, essential for bone health. Little did I know this was a clever marketing ploy from the major milk companies who would come into our schools and make us believe no different.
Today in our supermarkets there are over 80 different kinds of milk available; cow’s milk or goat’s milk, full fat, skim milk, lite or no-fat, calcium added or cholesterol reduced, I wonder when did milk become so complicated? In simpler times milk was milk, plain and simple.
There are many reasons why people don’t drink milk; from allergies to personal choice but thankfully there are some alternatives available that froth, taste and blend even better than the so-called ‘real thing’.
