Are the foods you eat too healthy?
We often wonder when we hear people say; “oh I couldn’t eat that, that’s too healthy” what those words actually mean. Are they saying they would rather eat unhealthy foods or have we totally lost the true understanding of what healthy actually means?
Definition: Healthy
The definition of ‘healthy’ in the dictionary is: having, showing, producing, or resulting from good health. When Tarian Pantry thinks of healthy we automatically think of two things: a balance wholefood diet and a lifestyle that is full of movement and physical exercise.
Definition: Un-healthy
The direct opposite is unhealthy: 1. having poor health; sickly 2. harmful to health 3. dangerous or risky [an unhealthy situation]. When we think of unhealthy we think of people who have little to no movement in their daily routine and those who consume a diet that is unbalanced i.e. high in saturated fat, sugars & salt.
Have we lost our way when it comes to health?
It seems we have lost focus and confidence in the word ‘healthy’ so its time to reclaim this word back into our daily mantra and embrace its positive meaning. By doing so you not only going to be nourishing your body with healthier foods but your mind is going to be nourished also – without a healthy sound mind, the body will eventually suffer.
We don’t like to think we eat healthy, more we eat real. We eat foods that are provided to us by nature, foods that have had little to no processing and no additives or preservatives. We want to eat foods with maximum nutritional value, foods that will fuel us to help achieve our daily activities and also help us achieve our athletic goals like running a marathon (& most importantly finishing it).
What are our choices?
When faced with the choice, to eat an apple that is packed with essential vitamins and minerals (vitamin C, K, thiamin, riboflavin, vitamin B6, folate and potassium as well as dietary fiber) or a packet of chips which has no nutritional value, is high in saturated fats and sodium I don’t think there is any competition. Sure the chips might taste good for the 1 minute it takes you to eat them but that’s the only good to come out of that snack.
We here at Tarian like to think that we are helping change how we think and view the word healthy. There is nothing wrong with eating foods that will help fight disease, obesity and help you live life to the full.
The ‘health’ aisle
We wish for our supermarkets to have more than one ‘health food’ aisle (think about it, what’s that saying about the other aisles?), we wish for our vending machines to be full of truly nutritious snacks not ones in disguise and for our schools to remove all fried & sugary foods from the tuck shop and replace them with nature’s foods. We only have one body and we want to make dam sure we look after it.
So next time you say, “oh I couldn’t eat that, its too healthy” think about what you are really saying?
